The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is an international, research-for-development organization that works with governments, civil society and the private sector to solve water problems in developing countries and scale up solutions. Through partnership, IWMI combines research on the sustainable use of water and land resources, knowledge services and products with capacity strengthening, dialogue and policy analysis to support implementation of water management solutions for agriculture, ecosystems, climate change and inclusive economic growth. Headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka, IWMI is a CGIAR Research Center with offices in 13 countries and a global network of scientists operating in more than 30 countries.

Limpopo Watercoourse Commission

In 2003, representatives from Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique signed the Agreement on the Establishment of the Limpopo Watercourse Commission

“The Objectives of the Commission shall be to advise the Contracting Parties and provide recommendations on the uses of the Limpopo, its tributaries and its waters for purpose and measures of protection, preservation and management of the Limpopo.” The offices of LIMCOM are located in Mozambique, southern Africa.

Rivers of Life located in the University of Mpumalanga, South Africa

Rivers of Life Aquatic Health Services (ROL) is an applied research organisation providing water resources management and conservation services throughout Africa. Rivers of Life is operated from the University of Mpumalanga and University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.  Rivers of Life has four main Research Themes namely: Water Resource Protection, Biodiversity and Conservation, Fisheries Research and Capacity Building and Training.

South African National Parks, Kruger National Park, South Africa

SANParks is a South African Government public entity under the jurisdiction of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).  SANParks practices a policy of inclusive conservation, in the process managing twenty national parks totalling 4.2 million hectares of land and 375,000 hectares of marine protected area.

This specific project undertaken by IWMI was titled Environmental flows for the Limpopo River – building more resilient communities and ecosystems through improved management of transboundary natural resources.
